Processing

Aim: Perform actions on ESI to allow for metadata preservation, itemization, normalization of format, and data reduction via selection for review.

The processing stage is key as it takes the data from the identification, preservation and collection stages and provides the first clear opportunity for you to drill down and cull the data before moving it on to the review phase. We encourage our clients to work with the data set at this stage to try and bring it down into a manageable set for review by taking out files that fall outside of your date range, that don’t hit your search terms and de-duplicating data on a top level basis. These are all defensible reduction tactics and will help meet proportionality and reduce costs and time spent reviewing data.

Typically, data can be in different containers at this stage, be it forensic images, email containers such as PST or NSF files, archive containers such as RAR or ZIP and on tapes or backups. Apogee will work with the data so that it runs through the processing tool and is placed into a format that can be used with your chosen review tool. The eDisclosure processing tool that the Apogee team use ensures that the data is passed through to the review tool maintaining all the original metadata and during this phase and that the text from the documents is extracted allowing for searching to take place.

It is at the end of this stage that the Apogee team will be able to confirm how much data you will be hosting going forward.
